The chemistry is right - cooperation will be expanded

Ceremony to mark the 20-year partnership between BASF and Gazprom

Berlin. At 15 by 10 centimeters the memento is quite small, but highly symbolic in importance. It is a small part of the desk on which the "Agreement on Cooperation in the Gas Industry" was signed 20 years ago by BASF and Gazprom. As the high point of the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the companies, the former Chancellor handed over the framed and decorated present to the Chairmen of the Boards of Executive Directors, Jürgen Hambrecht and Alexej Miller.

"No great international challenge - be it energy security, climate change or the conflicts in the Near and Middle East - can be surmounted without Russia," said Mr. Schröder in his earlier speech before numerous guests from the worlds of politics and economics. He also pointed out that it was therefore in Europe's best own interest to further promote interaction with Russia. "The partnership between Germany and Russia takes on a truly special importance here. BASF-Wintershall and Gazprom have essentially promoted and shaped this partnership over the last 20 years - and produced a blueprint for further cooperation." The former Chancellor has intensively supported the continuance and deepening of the partnership between the two companies.

The Federal German Government would like to see a long-term, equal-footing energy partnership, said Eckart von Klaeden, State Minister at the Chancellor's Office. Former Federal German Defense Minister, Volker Rühe, and the Russian Ambassador in Germany, Vladimir M. Grinin, also congratulated both companies on their successful cooperation in their speeches.

Gazprom Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, Alexej Miller, also called for new joint projects with BASF. "Both companies are globally active, so why shouldn't BASF and Gazprom's cooperation also take on a global character?" he asked the audience in Berlin "Much has been contributed to the cooperation over the years. We have reached a new, higher level of partnership. Today, we work side-by-side along the entire value creation chain - from production to sales. Our relationship is based on mutual trust and appreciation. Our employees and business partners are becoming good and better friends all the time. I am very much convinced that new success stories lie ahead of us - including more exceptional and more exciting projects," emphasized the Gazprom Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors.

"When Gazprom and BASF signed the first agreements at the beginning of the 90s, very few would have imagined how successfully this partnership would develop," explained BASF Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, Dr. Jürgen Hambrecht. "We are extremely proud today of what we have achieved, and look optimistically to the future. After all, we have got big plans for yet more joint projects." He also pointed out that the partnership is not limited to Central Europe. "Why shouldn't we also work together at and beyond Europe's borders?" he asked.

Dr. Hambrecht praised the two companies' cooperation in his speech. "Over the past 20 years, there have been various tests which we have passed successfully. Due in part to the fact that the cooperation is supported by mutual respect, openness, trust, reliability and the acceptance of differences," the BASF Chairman continued. "After all, the chemistry between the companies and their employees is just right. Over the past 20 years there's never been a time when the two sides couldn't rely on each other."

BASF, its Kassel-based oil and gas subsidiary, Wintershall, and Gazprom agreed in 1990 to market Russian natural gas long-term in Germany. The companies now cooperate in the development of gas reserves in Siberia, with gas transports to Germany, and in the sale of natural gas with their trading company WINGAS.
