Energy efficiency policy: Political intervention can distort competition

WINGAS at the Handelsblatt Annual Conference in Vienna

The energy markets are changing: More than 100 experts have now met at the Handelsblatt Annual Conference in Vienna to discuss current trends and developments in Austria's energy market. The conference is one of Austria's most prominent events for the energy business. As in previous years, WINGAS also presented itself this time at the conference.

In his presentation, Hamead Ahrary, head of central Europe at WINGAS, described, alongside the upheaval that the Austrian market has been undergoing for several years (as have many other European gas markets), the numerous dimensions involved in supply security. The focus was on the question as to how supply security and barriers to market entry are interconnected. Additional regulatory intervention, such as the energy efficiency policy, could, for instance, create new barriers to market entry.
