Kassel. Natural gas vehicles have experienced growth in recent years. And rightly so - they are comfortable and efficiently help to reduce CO2 emissions. Peter Weisheit, spokesman for VW technology explains why natural gas mobility still has great potential.
Mr. Weisheit, what are the advantages of a natural gas vehicle?
In addition to the advantages for climate protection, the customer saves up to 50% of fuel costs compared to conventional drive systems. That puts natural gas vehicles in the same league as electric vehicles – but with much lower investment costs for the vehicle.
How climate-friendly is natural gas mobility?
Even when using natural gas, which is a fossil fuel, a natural gas vehicle already cuts back on CO2 emissions by about 25% compared to an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle. They become even more impressive when biomethane or wind methane is used for fuel. Depending on the study quoted and the origin of the sustainably produced methane, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 97 percent! Today there are already over 180 natural gas refueling stations in Germany that deliver pure biomethane – the average share of biomethane in Germany in 2013 was over 20 %. Many other refueling stations use varying mixtures of natural gas and biomethane.
