Tax break on natural gas as a fuel to remain in place

Bundestag decides to continue tax relief

Kassel / Berlin. The Bundestag has decided to keep the tax relief for natural gas and biomethane as fuels before its summer recess. The parliamentary parties of the CDU/CSU and SPD submitted a motion calling on the German government to present a draft bill on extending the energy tax reduction on natural gas and liquefied gas as fuels. The bill is expected to be submitted by the spring of 2016.

The extension to the tax relief is an important signal for planning and investment security for consumers and all market partners, since it is the foundation for further investment in drive technology and the service station network. A lower rate of energy tax, which is to run until the end of 2018, has applied up to now for natural gas and biomethane as climate-friendly fuels. The aim of continuing the tax break is to give further impetus to decarbonization of transport and market penetration of natural gas vehicles, which are offered by many well-known manufacturers.
