Successful rating: Due to its environmental and social standards, WINGAS lands under the top 30 percent of all evaluated supply companies.
Kassel. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) play a decisive role in the competition nowadays. Companies select their suppliers no longer simply according to the price, but they also want to know: How does the supplier address the topic of environmental protection? What do work conditions look like at the supplier’s company? Does it adhere to standards and laws?
All of this information, in addition to proof, is meticulously requested for the tendering process. “Answering such questionnaires requires considerable internal resources,” says Sergei Gutmann, Account Manager at WINGAS. After all, this often entails involving legal, personnel and HSE departments, as well as other ones.
In light of this, WINGAS decided to have its own standards evaluated using the EcoVadis platform. The evaluation included answering a questionnaire divided into five different thematic areas and is tailored specifically to the sector and size of the company. Furthermore, it called for providing information such as which “measures pertaining to sustainable/responsible procurement” are implemented at the company, or how high the direct CO2 emissions were the previous year.
Researching all the information for this was a complex task. “The main challenge was finding the correct documents that serve as proof of our answers in a detailed manner and with the correct page numbers,” explains project manager Gutmann. The result is very impressive: EcoVadis awarded WINGAS with the silver badge, which is the second-highest rating. “This means that we are among the top 30 percent of all the evaluated companies,” says a delighted Gutmann. “Therefore, we can proactively demonstrate as a company how well we are performing in terms of sustainability criteria.”
The EcoVadis platform was established in 2007 and provides CSR ratings of suppliers for global supply chains. According to information provided by the operators, 30,000 suppliers throughout the world have already been evaluated. Procurement departments from more than 120 of the world’s leading companies draw on EcoVadis evaluations. These companies include Nestlé, Heineken, Johnson & Johnson or BASF.
